Acorns

Hello and welcome to the wonderful Acorns!. In Acorns we now have 3 staff members of staff, Mrs Brandreth and Mrs Smalley are the class teachers and Mrs Breckwoldt our teaching assistant. Acorns are the youngest children in the school, ranging from Years 1 to 3.

In English, we will be practicing our letter formation and our sentence writing skills. Our first book focus will be ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell. We will be looking at the features of letters and learn how to write our own letters to the zoo. Next, we will be learning about the features of fiction and non-fiction texts in order to create our own texts.

Books we will be using during the Autumn term:

Fiction: Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, The Midnight Panther by Poonam Mistry, A Day at the Zoo (Various authors/collections), Silly Doggy! by Chris Haughton, The Rainbow Bear by Michael Morpurgo and Michael Foreman, Goodnight Everyone by Chris Haughton. Phonics. We following the ‘Letters and Sound’ programme to help us recognise, recall and use phonemes. You will find useful free games and resources at the following website: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk  

Reading. There is an expectation that all of our children read or share books with you at home. If your child reads at home 4 times in a week, they will receive a Reading Raffle ticket which enters them into a draw held every term. Everyone loves the Reading Raffle, as participants can win games, books and other exciting prizes.

In Maths we follow the White Rose scheme of work. During the Autumn term we will be learning about place value and addition and subtraction. Maths

In Maths we follow the White Rose scheme of work. During the Summer Term we will be learning about fractions, time and geometry (shape / position and direction). In Geography we will be looking at our local area around our school. Using aerial maps, keys and locational/ directional language. We will be learning about human and physical features and discussing what we like and dislike about our school grounds.

In History we will be learning about toys and how they have changed over the years.

In Art we will be creating a collage of a local Manchester park, using natural and recycled materials, we will paint a cityscape of Manchester focusing on colour mixing using watercolours and create art inspired by Manchester-based artist, Adolphe Valette, focusing on his impressionistic city scenes.

In Science we will be learning about “Ourselves and Our Senses”, focusing on identifying our five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch), the body parts associated with each sense (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin), and exploring how these senses help us understand the world around us.

Our PE focus for this term is team building. We will be developing our listening and teamwork skills by completing OAA challenges on a Tuesday afternoon, and we will be learning cricket skills on a Wednesday afternoon. As the weather is getting colder and wetter, please send in an outdoor kit (a jumper, jogging bottoms & trainers). We will send PE kits home every half term. Every day we run our ‘Daily Mile’ to help us to keep really healthy and be ready to learn.
